Peer Pitch & Concept Refinement Chart

According to Dungy, “As editors we are charged with shepherding new ways of seeing, thinking, and being into the world.” This quote is key in establishing how as editors we need to be innovative and think deep on new ideas. We pitched our idea for our portfolio this week and got some helpful feedback from the teacher and our peers. Our original idea was to do a sports and health magazine that would cover the general specifics of sports along with the health side that influences athletic performance. The idea itself was good but it was too general, and we were advised to make the magazine less broad. Since we started our pitch at the end of class, we didn’t really get peer feedback, but the peers we did hear from gave us insightful comments on what to improve. The main feedback was to have us focus on just one major thing, so we chose to focus on health. According to Statistica, “the ESPN magazine has 106.76 million readers.” The ESPN magazine is like our concept so based on this our magazine is projected to have a large audience. According to Dungy, “through literature we formulate our cultural imagination.” This means that magazines and literature are so important and can make a great impact on imagination and your thoughts. The magazine industry is constantly changing and the new trend for 2020 is to use data to deliver content (OBP). In our magazine we will try to include data to make it as appealing as possible for our audience. Additionally, a key part of magazines is making it relevant and selling its relevance (Statistica). Our concept is relevant and should sell easily because we have a broad audience and content for everyone. Overall, we are making our magazine focus mainly on health, meaning dieting, exercises, and how to stay healthy without sports.

Target Audience (Be specific)

High School and College students, athletes, general audience for sports

What is your concept? (Be thorough & specific. Review the links on Blackboard)

Our concept is covering the general specifics of college and high school sports. We want to cover athletes and how they stay healthy through rigorous diet and training, along with their future. With this we want to discuss how to take the big step from high school to college level athletics, and the large changes one makes doing so.

We also want to cover the major health side of things, and how you necessarily don’t need to play a sport to stay healthy and how somebody can incorporate a strong diet and routine in order to consistently keep progression.

How did you conceive the idea for this concept?

We both have a strong general interest in sports and health, our understanding of these subjects is also very broad and widened, meaning it would be much easier for us to cover these in a magazine

What do you believe is unique about your concept?

Our concept is unique because no other magazine has combined the two. It’s unique because it covers athletes that aren’t already pro. It’s something that magazines don’t really cover; we can go more in depth on certain concepts that aren’t always discussed.

Why do you believe this product will be of interest to your audience?

It will be interesting because it discusses things that other magazines don’t cover. It will also be beneficial to athletes that are trying to change their lifestyle and people that are trying to find motivation to take the next step in their fitness.

  • Don’t be as broad- We had a lot of ideas on what to include in our magazine but there was too much. The original idea was to do sports and health but now the focus is mainly health. Our magazine will include dieting and other things to stay healthy.

  • Focus on either just sports or just health- we are now doing just health instead of sports and health. We are going to focus and highlight the major parts of health we find important and will allow for readers to have a better understanding, while also highlighting the most interesting things that will keep a reader's attention.
